Most US states make pet food, treat and animal feed brands register each product, license the company, or both, before selling there. Fees, deadlines and forms differ by state, and often differ again for horse, livestock and poultry feed. Here are all 50 states and DC (Alaska and the District of Columbia have no registration at all), every fact checked against the state agency's own page or the law on October 3, 2026, plus a free fee calculator.

Joint chews, probiotics and calming products are "animal remedies" in some states, with their own registration. See supplement registration by state.

Every fact links to the agency's own page, form or statute on each state's page. Checked October 3, 2026. "Tonnage report" means the state wants a report of how much you sold; the fee depends on tonnage, so we show the due date and agency link but don't calculate it.

Yes, AAFCO (the Association of American Feed Control Officials) has two free resources, and both are good starting points. Its State Regulatory Requirement Summary chart says "Last updated November 2022". It also has a page for each state with the feed program's contacts, statutes and fee notes; those pages show no update date, and most were last edited in 2024. In places they differ from the state's own current source. For example, AAFCO's Ohio page lists "Permanent Registration", but Ohio Revised Code 923.42 now requires a $50 registration every year, expiring January 31. Its Iowa page lists a "$10/license, annual renewal on July 1"; Iowa Code 198.4 sets a $20 license that runs two years. Its Florida page says the fee is due January 1; Florida Statutes 580.041 says registrations expire June 30. Its Utah page lists $60 per product; UDAF's fee schedule says $75. Each state page here links AAFCO's page for that state and lists any differences we checked, and every fact links to the agency's current page, form or statute.
Yes. Choose "Other animal feed or treats" in the calculator. Most of these states regulate it under the same law as pet food, but in 20 of them (California, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington and West Virginia) the rules and fees differ. See the feed rules by state.
Yes. Choose "Supplement / animal health product (remedy)" in the calculator. North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Vermont, Virginia and Wyoming register animal remedies (dosage-form animal health products) product by product. Some other states say supplements can fall under their feed or pet food law instead. We quote each state's wording and the state decides. Supplement registration by state.
Usually one recipe or formula under one product name. Some states charge by package size, so the calculator asks for sizes. Iowa and North Carolina say one product's fee covers all its package sizes. When in doubt, ask the agency.
No. The pack tells you exactly what to file, where and when, with the forms linked. You (or whoever you choose) file with each state.
